Castro Photos, Funny Pictures & Late-Night-TV Zingers

by Strange de Jim

December 2008

Yours truly looking over the shoulders of Dame Edna, her boytoy/publicist Charly Zukow and chief bodyguard Bruno. Charly is carrying her flowers and wearing the diamond ear studs she bought him. Bruno sleeps in her bedchamber to protect her. See story below.

Leah Garchik
San Francisco Chronicle, Leah Garchik's column, 12/3/08: The Castro Theatre's showings of "Milk" broke box office records, in the country - the Castro had the biggest gross nationwide - and in the 86-year-old history of the house. (Theaters don't like to give out numbers, but there were five almost-sold-out shows a day, Wednesday through Sunday; I'm figuring the take - not all cash, of course - was almost a third of a million dollars.) And the Balboa Theater's Gary Meyer, noting that display ads for the movie feature a contest with a trip to San Francisco as first prize, wonders what happens if you already live here.

Castro Photos

By December 1 Santa had already landed on the roof of the Cafe Flore at Market and Noe.

Here's the Castro Christmas tree being erected in front of Bank of America on Castro at 18th.

To coincide with the showing of Milk at the Castro Theatre, the GLBT Historical Society has opened an exhibit in the old Ritz Camera building on the corner of 18th and Castro.

On a sadder note, declining sales have forced owner Tim Oviatt to close All American Boy. one of the first gay stores in the neighborhood, after 32 years.

Dec. 6, Hank Wilson Memorial Service

A memorial service for gay activist Hank Wilson (April 29, 1947 - November 9, 2008) was held Sat., Dec. 6 at the Eureka Valley Recreation Center, followed by a parade through the Castro.

That's Hank on the right after the celebration for what would have been Harvey Milk's 77th birthday, at Given Gifts, the site of Harvey's old camera store on Castro, May 22, 2007.

This is the reception before the service for Hank.

Dr. John Newmeyer (center) was there.

As was the fabled Brownstone.

State Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (l.) was among the speakers.

Here was the service itself. For more information on Hank's life, visit his Wikipedia page by clicking here.

Dec. 9, Dame Edna Lights Our Tree

Mayor and First Lady Newsom and the Rainbow World Fund hosted the tree lighting ceremony at City Hall Tuesday, December 9. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were out in force.

Not to mention publicist and friend of Dame Edna, Ken Maley.

Here I am with emcee Donna Sachet.

First Lady Jennifer Siebel Newsom was one of the first speakers.

Dame Edna led the countdown to light the tree.

Then the speakers gathered for a photo op. The First Lady was missing. Dame Edna explained that she and Gavin had once been a hot item, and dear little Jennifer was uncomfortable being in the same room with her.

Afterwards Dame Edna accepted homage from her possums.

Charly Zukow (l.), Dame Edna's publicist, then hurried her out so she wouldn't miss her performance at the Post Street Theatre (through January 4).

My pal Peter saluted her.

Outside, the concourse was magical.

Dec. 16: Santacon

From Leah Garchik's column, San Francisco Chronicle, Dec. 16:

Meanwhile, Santacon participants gathered Saturday in Dolores Park. Strange de Jim's attendance estimate: 1,300 Santas. Among them was Kevin Hunsanger, who inquired of Costumes on Haight, from whom he was renting his Santa-ness, "What happens if I'm attacked by zombies?" This was no idle question, he says, because at least once in the 15-year-history of Santacon, zombies did set upon the Santas. The clerk assured Hunsanger, "If a zombie splatters you with blood, we can clean it for free, part of the rental. If a zombie eats your costume, you owe the full $100 deposit."

Dec. 18: Given Party

Given Gifts, 575 Castro, on the site of Harvey Milk's old camera store, held a party for members of shopping site Yelp.com.

Pictured (l. to r.) are Given owner Nick Romero, artist/clerk Matt Gibbons, and my roomie Stephen.

Merry Christmas

Magnet Health Center on 18th near Castro, which specializes in sexually transmitted diseases, was open the day after Christmas.

Jay said he was once performing in a club in the South where the governor was sitting in the front row with two hookers. The governor told him, "Yoou only get in trouble if you're caught with a dead woman or a live boy."

American Lightning by Howard Blum, Crown Publishers, 2008
Terror, Mystery, the Birth of Hollywood, and the Crime of the Century

The Los Angeles Times Building was blown up October 1, 1910, killing twenty-one people. The event brought together three titans: movie pioneer D.W. Griffith, legendary lawyer Clarence Darrow, and the American Sherlock Holmes, Billy Burns, founder of the Burns Detective Agency. Supporting players included everyone from actress Mary Pickford, Times owner Gen. Harrison Gray Otis, and muckraking journalist Lincoln Steffens. This is a fascinating, meticulously researched tale.

There were so many photos and funny pictures this month that they spilled over to another page. Click for Part 2.
