Castro & Other Photos

Each April 1 features a St. Stupid's Day Parade, starting from the foot of Market Street. Here are costumed characters assembling.

These Doggie Diner heads are ready to join the parade.

April 7: I like this photo of Jake Vreeburg and me reflected in the center of a building in Yerba Buena Center.

April 10 at Harvey's, Castro & 18th. Joe Robinson, Michael "Santa" Brownstone and Dr. John Newmeyer. Brownstone claimed all his civvies were in the laundry. He kept asking cuties out to his casting sleigh.

April 10 - 12: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence celebrated their 30th anniversary. For pictures of the Good Friday do at Yerba Buena Center and Easter (with a Hunky Jesus Contest) in Dolores Park, click here.

April 11: Coffee at the Cafe Flore with the fabled (click for it) David Cates.

David and I walked past Kenneth Wingard, on Market between Castro and Noe, and spied a real scum bag.

Here's the memorial at 18th and Castro for Dan Cusick, AIDS worker and manager of the Castro Country Club, who died at age 50.

Another memorial in the window of Cliff's for my old friend Guy "Princess" Peterson, who worked at Cliff's for almost 30 years, a member of Cliff's family forever.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 23, at the Metropolitan Community Church, 150 Eureka St. (between 18th & 19th).

On a much happier note, here's the April 25 signing at Under One Roof for Bill McBride's new book Carrying a Load of Feathers. That's Bill in the center. On the right is Steve Gibson, director of Magnet Health Center. Bill's earlier best-seller is Entertaining an Elephant. His web site is www.entertaininganelephant.com.

Brownstone (right) had food on his mind all day. It turned out to be the hot dog on his hat. That's Dr. John Newmeyer on the left.

The Cafe Flore has new chairs.

And right next to the Cafe Flore is a new Farmer's Market every Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. until October 28.

A visit to the Museum of Modern Art

That's my friend Sam taking a picture of me on the balcony. I like the look of the brickwork on the left.

My pal Jake Vreeburg calls this "Oodles of Poodles." The dogs are looking at a baby on a star.

I laughed at this photo titled "Private Property."

San Francisco Chronicle, Leah Garchik's column, 4/10/09: In honor of four states recognizing the legality of gay marriage, Strange de Jim reports that on Wednesday an anonymous person paid $2 toward every customer's coffee at the Starbucks at 18th and Castro.

San Francisco Chronicle, Leah Garchik's column, 4/13/09: Strange de Jim overheard a woman defining what he calls planned parenthood: "Trying to have your kids on the same birthday so they can all get in free to Disneyland at once."

Don Asmussen's "Bad Reporter" in the April 3 San Francisco Chronicle had a wonderful first panel

Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler, Simon Spotlight Entertainment 2008

Chelsea Handler's take-no-prisoners attitude to life makes me feel like I have a twin. Below are just a few of the hundreds of passages that tickled me in the book.

Page 8 - I remember having this feeling early on, during my second day of kindergarten. It became apparent to me that all of my classmates had the necessary faculties to play a serious game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, but had no designs on how to forge a late note from their parents.

17 - The lesson I learned that year was a valuable one. If you're going to make up an enormous untruth, make sure you tell it to people you are not spending the rest of the school year with. I can only imagine what Clay Aiken has to deal with on a daily basis.

21 - I was too young to work legally, so I only had two realistic options: I could either start my own underground baby-sitting ring or become a prostitute. Although I had developed a serious crush on our plumber that year, I wasn't sure that I was ready for penetration.

23 - [Baby-sitting] I preferred babies since they couldn't talk and tell their parents that I'd spent half the night on the phone talking to my best friend, Jodi, in New Jersey, and the other half of the night going through their personal items.

28 - This was clearly a woman who would fly off the handle if she came home to find one of her kids missing.

44 - "Miss, you can take a Breathalyzer here, or we can test your urine down at the station. Which would you prefer?" "That depends," I said. "Is there any way to detect marijuana through a Breathalyzer?"

48 - There was much planning to be done if I truly was going to prison: My first priority was to start thinking about what kind of gang I would join. I hoped my uncle wasn't still mad at me for choosing to have sex with a family friend instead of him when my cousins and I were playing the "Who Would You Rather Have Sex With?" game.

52 - There were women there who clearly had never heard of a razor, never mind a bikini wax. Hedge trimmers would have been a more appropriate tool for the situations going on in between some of these women's legs. One woman looked like she had Buckwheat stuck in a leglock.

100 - I had never met a man with such sensitive nipples before, and I took enormous delight in the fact that the minute I touched one, he would climax. ... With that knowledge in hand, sex never lasted a second longer than I wanted, and I considered this to be the jackpot of all jackpots.

171 - He had no sense of humor about it, and was being very defensive and nasty. If we couldn't laugh at his mother's appearance, then what kind of future did we have?

184 - I had been seeing a therapist for nearly three weeks and was getting the sinking feeling that she was no closer to prescribing me medication than when we first met.

239 -This happens to be something that I have a real problem with: homeless people with pets who approach you for food. How can they have the nerve to beg for food when they have a perfectly delicious dog standing right there?

"The movie's called 17 Again, and it's about an older man inside a younger man's body."
